Manina lebt in Venedig und malt seit dem Mord an ihrer Tochter surrealistische Bilder, in denen sie ihre Vision von Unsterblichkeit beschwört. Helga Geiger ist Krankenschwester, die seit 10 Jahren aidskranke Patienten betreut und ihnen besteht bis zum Tod. Der Anatom Gunther von Hagens präpariert nach einem selbsterfundenen Verfahren Leichen, um sie als “natural art” in alle Ewigkeit haltbar zu machen.
Es ist seltsam, aber diese “Begegnungen mit dem Tod” strahlen Lebendigkeit aus. Sie ergreifen - so altmodisch muß man es formulieren - das Herz, wirken sehr wahrhaftig und eigentümlich tröstlich. Nichts Weihevolles, nichts Missionarisches, nichts Selbstgefälliges ist hier zu hören. Kein falscher Ton aus Trauerarbeitskreisen stört die Atmosphäre diskreter Intimität, wie sie für Riedelsheimers Dokumentationen charakteristisch ist. Von der Einsamkeit im Angesicht des Todes - und von der individuellen Kraft, mit dieser Einsamkeit zu leben, erzählt diese Dokumentation. So unaufdringlich, so sanft-hypnotisch, daß man der Alltagshektik für ein paar Stunden verloren geht.

 Manina lives in Venice. Since the murder of her daughter she has been painting surrealist pictures in which she conjures up her vision of immortality. Helga Geiger is a nurse who has been looking after aids patients for ten years, standing by them until their death. Anatomist Gunther von Hagens preserves corpses with his own self-invented method to conserve them as “natural art” for all eternity.

It is odd, but these “encounters with death” radiate vitality. They tug at your heart strings – there’s really no other way to say it – and seem very real and strangely consolatory. There’s no solemnity, missionary intentions or self-satisfaction in this film. There are no false noises from mourning circles to disturb the atmosphere of discreet intimacy that is typical of Riedelsheimer’s documentaries. This documentary is about loneliness in the face of death – and about the individual’s power to live with this loneliness. It is so unobtrusive, so gently hypnotic that the chaos of daily life gets forgotten for a few hours.
